About Highway Safety Products

Highway Safety Products (HSP) commenced operations in 2000 as Brifen South Africa. The name was intended to convey our dedication and sole purpose of promoting the use of a safer alternative to the steel guardrail systems that we see on all of our roads. BRIFEN™ is the only patented Wire Rope Safety Fence in the world, and outstandingly has a worldwide safety record of no cross over accidents and no fatalities.

The use of Wire Rope Safety Fence systems has proven to be safer and more effective than conventional safety barrier systems. It is more expensive to install than guardrail, but is much cheaper to maintain, as well as being much quicker to repair.

A BRIFEN™ system can be repaired in less than 20% of the time it takes to repair a conventional steel guardrail system. The cost of the repair is less than 15% of the cost of repairing guardrail.

Historically the various South African Roads Authorities did not have a comprehensive range of “safe” longitudinal barriers available to them to enable the right choices to be made when deciding on safety barriers for the specific applications.

With this in mind Highway Safety Products have expanded the range of products to include all types of longitudinal barriers that are approved and accepted by the Highways Agency of the United Kingdom. All of which are road research laboratory tested and  supplied and installed in accordance with the Highways Agency specifications

HSP is solely a marketing organization, and is an empowered organisation. Countrywide distribution is carried out through a network of black owned selling organizations, and all installation work is sub contracted to previously disadvantaged (small) contractors. This is in line with both Government and Provincial policy requirements. HSP markets the products directly to the specifiers in both National and Provincial Governments, and then tenders either on a joint venture basis or on a supply and (install) transfer of skills basis with distributors and sub contractors on projects in the various areas.
